Overview
The Makalu Base Camp Trek follows the Barun River through Makalu Barun National Park — a conservation area spanning tropical forest to high alpine terrain in the space of a single valley, home to red pandas, snow leopards and over 400 bird species. The trail sees very few trekkers compared to Nepal's more famous routes, climbing gradually through Sherpa and Rai villages before reaching the wild, glacier-lined amphitheatre at the foot of Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest mountain. Camping is required for most of the route, as teahouse infrastructure remains minimal.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1–2
Fly Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, drive/trek to Num
Fly to the eastern lowlands and reach the trailhead.
Day 3–5
Trek to Seduwa and Tashigaon
Follow the Arun and Barun valleys through Rai villages.
Day 6–8
Trek to Khongma and Dobato
Climb into Makalu Barun National Park through rhododendron forest.
Day 9–11
Trek to Yangle Kharka and Langmale
Enter the upper Barun valley, glaciers now visible ahead.
Day 12–13
Trek to Makalu Base Camp
Reach the base camp (5,250 m) beneath Makalu's south face.
Day 14
Explore Makalu Base Camp
Rest day with optional viewpoint hikes.
Day 15–19
Trek back to Tashigaon and Num
Retrace the route back down the Barun valley.
Day 20–21
Drive to Tumlingtar, fly to Kathmandu
Return flights back to Kathmandu.
